SOS FRIEND LETTER

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Dear Skate Park of Spartanburg Friend,

A skate park is a great way for the kids of Spartanburg to build community with other kids of different ages and groups while pushing themselves physically and building self esteem that comes from enjoyment and mastery of new skills. Spartanburg is in need of positive things for kids to do and adding a recreational skate park to the community will give our young population a place to use their creative energies and positively interact with others.

Skating is now the third largest participant sport in the U.S

. Today, there are over 16 million skateboarders and an estimated 400 public skate parks. Interestingly, in 2002, there were only 9 million little league baseball players in the U.S. and yet most cities with had yet to build skate parks. At a recent national convention of parks-and-recreation officials, the topic most were eager to discuss was the building of skate parks. Currently, Spartanburg kids who want to skateboard are traveling to Greenville, Asheville, and Inman.

Fortunately, our city recognizes the importance of listening to our young people and after local skaters “selected” a site on Union Street, the city responded. On our home front, the site work for the proposed park on Union Street is almost ready to implement. The location is ideal because it is next to the walking trail and behind the YMCA and that will lend itself to becoming an athletic center in a centrally located area along with improving Union Street. We also anticipate that the new facility will also be able to host other outdoor events. Thus far, the city has completed legal work, signed the lease and addressed such issues as parking, fencing, lighting, landscaping, etc. Already on board, the city has hired engineers, a construction manager and an expert skating consultant all of whom are helping to bring us closer to construction.

Now, the project is back in the hands of the skate boarders and the community. The kids are desperately anxious to see this skate park come to life and your support will bring the project closer to breaking ground. Skateboarding keeps kids exercising outdoors and gives them the opportunity to develop skills physically and socially. Please show your support for the kids of Spartanburg and the coming skate park. Your financial donation will help get the project started and improve the community.

Thank you and be part of this skate park movement!

April Spring Fling Fun

Check out Clayton and Garrett !!
Spring Fling was awesome! We had a ball. The city helped bring in American Ramp Company to set up a temporary Skate Park. The weather was perfect and everyone had a great time. Thanks to everyone who worked a shift and all who came out to support the event. It was really fun to watch the kids and the adults skate. It was also a treat to see Micah and some of his Celtic team come out and rip. Lots of kids showed up to skate and we had a chance to look at some different designs and skate the ARC eequipement. Also, local ESPN showed up with tshirts and water bottles and has offered to help us publicize.
Other updates: We are going with a 3-inch poured concrete surface rather than the polished surface due to city engineer recommendations. The good news here is that they are willing and in agreement to do the top elevated slab in concrete and build in concrete skate elements. This is huge and is a giant plus for concrete lovers. The remainder of the lower area will be whatever modular equipment we can afford and choose. Be thinking about additional fund raising and grants we can apply for. Also, due to the tremendous cost of doing the “rail” trail to the park, the “children’s pocket park” we now be situated on the other side of the rail trail at the trail head. We have stressed the importance of having the trail connect to our park and also talked about the visability between the two parks.
Also, watch the city channel, 14, for our skate park “commercial”. Harriette, Mitch and Lamar, you two did a fabulous job!!!!!!! The skaters, Wade, Bow, Hollis, Parker, Clayton, and Carroll and all the kids make it look fun and easy

SOS May 2008 Recap

Here’s a brief overview of what we discussed:
Updates:
Concrete - park will be 3 inches poured concrete and elevated structure will be poured concrete with concrete street like features. Skate pad will be approx 120 x 150. This gives us amazing potential to create a large and amazing skatepark. Modular building with be 840 sq feet. (idea - make modular bldg look like a caboose/train and call it the Rail Trail Express Concessions!!??)
Children’s Park Location - probably at trailhead. Will add more parking and Palmetto Conservation would like to see a shelter for Farmer’s market and kid’s parties. Palmetto Conservation agreed to let city use funds to help with the connector. This was impt because we need all our money to go towards skate equipment.
Time Frame - Bids should be out on the street now and then it is a 2 week period.
CAY Fundraising:
Goal - We would like to go for the last push for funds so that we start with the most equipment possible in Phase 1.
Plan to Raise $ - We discussed companies and individuals who might be interested in naming opportunities for the park. We have some prospects and will pursue. Help us here with your ideas and contacts.
We talked about getting the local colleges and schools more involved.
Other:
- GREAT NEWS - we got $10,000 grant money from Spartanburg Regional Foundation in the most competitive grant year ever. All the amazing community support has been phenomenal.
- ask city to make a bus stop at skatepark to accommodate kids from other sections of town. give kids a reason to ride!

Welcome!
